Menopause and perimenopause: the difference

Perimenopause is the transition, which can start years earlier, with irregular periods and symptoms that come and go. Menopause is confirmed after 12 months in a row without a period. In the United States it happens on average around age 51.

How pellets work in women

They release estradiol, and sometimes a low dose of testosterone, continuously. If you still have a uterus, estrogen usually needs progesterone to protect the uterine lining, and we review that in your plan.

What to know before you decide

They can cause uterine bleeding, acne or more body hair, and they are not indicated if you are pregnant, or if you have had hormone sensitive cancer or blood clots without a specialist evaluation. There are also FDA approved options, such as patches or gels, and I explain them so you can decide with all the information.

If you can't sleep, sweat at night or don't recognize yourself

Many women search "why do I wake up sweating", "why am I so irritable" or "why do I have no desire", and no one has told them it may be related to this stage. You do not have to put up with it or figure it out alone. Come in, tell me about it and we will review it together.

Who may be a candidate

  • Women with symptoms that affect their sleep, mood or intimate life.
  • Women in perimenopause or menopause, including surgical menopause.
  • Women with no contraindications at their evaluation.

When changes are noticed

It varies from woman to woman. We review it at your follow-up, with your symptoms and lab work.

Which lab tests are reviewed

I choose them based on your case. They may include estradiol, FSH, total and free testosterone, thyroid, blood count, glucose, cholesterol and liver function. In men I also review PSA, and in women your mammogram and Pap history.

How to prepare for your evaluation

  • Bring a list of your medications and supplements.
  • Bring recent lab work, if you have it.
  • Write down your symptoms and when they began.
  • Tell me your family history of cancer, blood clots or heart disease.

You do not need a referral to request your evaluation.

Your safety comes first. Pellets are placed only after my evaluation and your lab work, and not everyone is a candidate. Hormone pellets prepared by compounding pharmacies do not go through the FDA review that approved medications have. Like any hormone treatment they have risks and side effects, and other options exist. Results vary from person to person.
